Safety for service engineers working in wind turbine towers must always take first priority. That's why safety equipment and other fixtures have to be tested and approved according to official standards.
But equally important is that the various fixtures and safety equipment are also tested and approved to work together.
"If, for example, a fixture designed to help an engineer climb a ladder is installed with a fall arrest system without any guarantee that they can work together, safety can be compromised. Even though both are individually approved, it is by no means certain that they can work together," says Avanti Wind Systems General Manager in the USA, Kent Pedersen.

Consequently, Avanti Wind Systems has had the company's Climb Assist System and Fall Arrest System tested together to ensure that they work seamlessly together and do not have any adverse affect on each other.
Independent technology consultancy Force Technology performed the physical test of the two systems. Force Technology has over 60 years of experience with testing development and application of know-how and technology, with its headquarters in Denmark and subsidiaries in the USA, Sweden, Norway and Russia.
In its' test report, Force Technology concluded: "Based on the free fall tests conducted on the fall arrest system, it can be concluded that the dynamic performance of Avanti Fall Arrest System 2002 was not counteracted when the fall arrest system was used in combination with the Avanti Climb Assist System."
